America’s Cup, 37th Edition
It will be a great summer for the sailing aficionados as the 37th America’s Cup is approaching. Between August 22nd and October 20th, Barcelona will be hosting one of the most prestigious and prominent regattas.
The origins of this historical competition date back to 1851 when the New York Yacht Club decided to challenge the Royal Yacht Squadron in what the British where considered the best at that time: regattas.
Little did the English know, accepting the gauntlet have signed their defeat. Since then, the event turned into a repeated competition and in the 1857 it was renamed America’s Cup, form the sailing boat that first defeated the Royal Squadron. The Americans remained the winning team for 132 years, since 1983 when they encountered the Royal Perth Yacht Club with their sailing boat Australia II.
In more than 170 years of history of the America’s Cup, only four where able to gain the £100 Cup: United States, Australia, Switzerland, and New Zealand, the current Defender of the 37thEdition.
Between October 12th and 21st the final match will take place between the New Zealand Team and the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup. The latter will be divided into three set of matches: the Round-Robin (August 29th– September 8th), the Semifinals (September 14th to the 19th) and then the Final Match (September 26th – October 5th) with which the Challenger will arise to sail against the Defender.
Other than the official teams, special events will take place. The Unicredit Youth and Puig Women’s America’s Cup are scheduled respectively in-between of the Louis Vuitton Cup Final (Challengers Selection Series) and the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Final Match. A total of 12 teams will compete in preliminary regattas and at the end, they will have their own final march. It is the occasion for the next generation of foiling to rise and prove themselves in an environment with maximum exposure.
Officially, the show will begin with the Barcellona Preliminary Regattas (August 22nd-25th) where all the competing teams, New Zealand Team included, will race against each other as the opening act. The first top two teams will progress directly to the final match race where the winner takes it all! As if the thrill is not enough already, this year sees the Yacht Clubs use the newest foiling AC75 for the very first time, compared to the AC40 used until last year, competing to win the £100 Cup.
